Kiribati is expected the first country to disappear due to climate change by 2050, despite having contributed nothing to climate change, with close to zero emissions.
I was lucky enough to visit this country and capture pictures of the disappearing landscape, the village I stayed in which had never seen tourists before, and the sea wall that the locals had built in an effort to stop rising sea levels. We flew in a tiny sea plane, slept on the floor, travelled by boat between islands and ate sand worms.
Climate change is unfortunately very real, even if it doesn’t affect you and me directly. I remember an elder saying in I-Kiribati (translated to us) ‘the waves are getting closer’.
